Things are slowly getting underway. The Frauen-Bundesliga has already kicked off, with defending champions Bayern Munich starting their campaign with a dominant win. What else happened in the world of women’s football? It’s QB Weekly.
Bayern Munich is starting strong
Just like last season, Bayern Munich played in the opening match of the season. This time, however, the reigning champions did not start at home, but away against Union Berlin, where Marie-Louise Eta took charge for the first time after joining from Union’s men’s team. Her start, however, was far from a dream one. Her side suffered a 4:1 home defeat to Bayern. One of the league’s best wingers, Klara Bühl, opened the scoring.

And we’ll stay in Germany for a little while longer. This time, we’re heading to the third tier league, where Borussia Dortmund are looking to work their way up to the top flight. This season, they have strengthened their squad with several big names, led by captain and Germany legend Alexandra Popp. She enjoyed a dream debut in her new colours, scoring twice against Bielefeld to help BVB to a 3:0 win. Good and bad news from Barcelona FemenĂ
There was plenty happening in Barcelona this week as well. Let’s start with the bad news. Young rising star Clara Serrajordi is likely to miss the start of the season as well as the U20 World Cup, which will take place in Poland in September. The young midfielder, who already has UEFA Women's Champions League final minutes under her belt, suffered a wrist injury and will be sidelined for six weeks.
Phew, now for the good news. Following Alexia Putellas’ departure, it was unclear who would take over the captain’s armband. The leading candidate, however, was midfielder Patri Guijarro, who had already worn the armband in Putellas’ absence in previous seasons. The club’s squad has also become significantly younger following this summer’s departures, with Guijarro now one of the more experienced players in the team. This week, the club confirmed that Guijarro is indeed the new Culers captain.
And one final thing: the club has decided to retire the number 11 shirt. It belonged to Putellas, who is regarded as a Barcelona legend.
Macarana Stadium is gonna host the WWC opening and finale
We finally know where the 2027 Women’s World Cup champions will lift the trophy. FIFA unveiled the full match schedule last week, confirming that the iconic Maracanã in Brazil's capital Rio de Janeiro will host both the opening game and the final. Brazil will kick off the tournament there on 24 June, while the new world champions will be crowned at the same stadium on 25 July.
And yes, it is quite a stage. The Maracanã has already hosted the men’s World Cup final and will now become only the third stadium in history to host both the men’s and women’s finals, after the Rose Bowl in the United States and Sweden’s former Råsunda Stadium. The 2027 World Cup will be the first Women’s World Cup held in South America, with 64 matches played across eight Brazilian cities.
