Did You Know?

She was born in Madeira and grew up playing informal football with boys before joining local side Grupo Desportivo APEL’s women’s team as a teenager.

She has spoken about how her father and brother were initially reluctant to see her play with boys, but her mother insisted she should be allowed to follow her passion for football – a stance Fátima now credits with changing her life.

As a child she briefly tried triathlon, even winning early races.

Growing up she didn’t watch much football on TV and preferred to play, but she did look up to Marta and Alex Morgan on the women’s side and Liedson and Nani at Sporting, later adding Cristiano Ronaldo as her main men’s idol.

She studied Tourism and dreams of one day working as a guide back home in Madeira, leading visitors along levadas and into the island’s nature for hiking and adventure activities.
