Julia Emma Maria Tunturi is a Finnish international who plays primarily as a left-sided defender for Vittsjö GIK in Sweden’s OBOS Damallsvenskan. She has represented Finland at multiple youth levels and at senior level.
She started playing football as a six-year-old.
Her mum has kept folders of newspaper clippings about her football journey over the years.
Meditation and mindfulness exercises have helped her find more inner calm.
She has said she used to meditate “in secret” because she worried about what others might think.
She spent weeks largely alone during a concussion recovery, and came out of it with new insights about life and herself.
She has dual Swedish and Finnish citizenship.
During a difficult stretch, she read Carli Lloyd’s memoir When Nobody Was Watching — and said it opened her eyes to how much work it takes to reach the top.
