She played at a World Cup before she could even drive. Now Casey Phair is starting a new chapter in Europe

Imagine the situation. You are 16 years old. Most of your football matches are still watched mainly by parents standing on the sidelines, you have never played professional football and you are still supposed to have several years of high school ahead of you.

Almost 25,000 people were watching South Korea play Colombia in Sydney when Casey Phair came on in the 78th minute. At exactly 16 years and 26 days old, she became the youngest player ever to appear at a senior FIFA World Cup, men's or women's.

Three years later, Phair is still only 19. But she has already played at two World Cups, turned professional in the NWSL, moved to Sweden and now signed for Feyenoord.

So, who is Casey Phair?

From New Jersey to South Korea

Phair was born in South Korea in 2007 to a Korean mother and American father, before moving to the US as a baby.

Her family moved several times during her childhood and, interestingly, so did her position on the pitch. She played as a centre-back in New Hampshire, moved into midfield in Massachusetts and eventually became a striker while living in Tennessee.

After settling in New Jersey, Phair played for Players Development Academy and Pingry School, scoring 25 goals in 15 matches during her freshman season.

At home, however, Korea remained an important part of her life. Phair grew up speaking Korean with her mother and even learned to write it before starting American elementary school.

She was eligible to represent both countries and attended a US U17 camp, but eventually chose South Korea. "It just felt right to me," she later told ESPN. That decision changed her career remarkably quickly.

Phair first joined South Korea's U17 setup before being invited to train with the senior national team. A few months later, Colin Bell selected the then-15-year-old for his preliminary World Cup squad. She celebrated her 16th birthday shortly before the tournament.

A professional before finishing high school

Phair didn't only break the World Cup age record. She came off the bench again against Morocco and then started South Korea's final group match against Germany. Suddenly, the traditional American pathway of high school, college soccer and eventually the professional game didn't seem like the obvious choice anymore.

After the World Cup, Phair trained with several NWSL clubs before signing for Angel City in January 2024. At 16, she became the youngest player in the club's history.

The transition wasn't immediate. Going from youth football to training every day with professionals required her to adapt physically and learn everything from recovery to strength work. Her first competitive appearance for Angel City came several months later in the NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup. And while beginning her professional career, Phair did something slightly unusual. She went back to the U17s.

Having already played at the senior World Cup, she helped South Korea qualify for the 2024 U17 World Cup. During the Asian Cup qualification tournament, Phair became ill and reportedly visited hospital twice, but returned for the decisive third-place match against China and scored both goals in a 2:1 win.

A year after becoming the youngest player at a senior World Cup, she was finally playing at one designed for players her own age.

Europe is calling

In 2025, Angel City extended Phair's contract but sent her on loan to Stockholm's team Djurgården, giving her a chance to taste swedish Damallsvenskan. She made 12 Damallsvenskan appearances before returning to Los Angeles.

She played eight NWSL matches for Angel City in 2026, including her first league start, but with regular minutes becoming increasingly important, another European move followed. This time permanently. In August, Feyenoord signed Phair on a deal until 2029. Both clubs and Casey believe this is the best move for her and her future

It's easy to forget how young she still is. At 19, Phair has represented South Korea at senior level, played at two World Cups and experienced professional football in the US, Sweden and now the Netherlands.

For years, her name has been followed by the same label: the youngest player in World Cup history. And now, in Rotterdam, she can show why she was called up so young.
