Abigail Mackenzie Smith is an American professional soccer player who plays as a goalkeeper for the Houston Dash in the National Women's Soccer League.
She started playing soccer at six years old when her parents enrolled her to help channel her energy. As an only child, she didn’t have a sibling to go through the process with her.
She did both soccer and gymnastics in elementary school but ultimately chose soccer.
She didn’t focus on being a goalkeeper until age 10, but once she did, she fully committed.
She has scored multiple goals as a goalkeeper, including a 90-plus-yard punt that ended up as a game-winner against the University of Miami during her senior college season.
She won back-to-back NWSL Championships with two different teams—Portland Thorns in 2022 and Gotham FC in 2023.
While at Texas, she set a new school record for career shutouts (30), making her the most successful goalkeeper in Longhorns history in that category.
She has been called up to the US Women’s National Team multiple times but has yet to make her first senior international appearance.
She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science from the University of Texas at Austin and later completed an MBA in Business Administration and Management from Western Governors University.
She holds a USSF C Coaching License from the U.S. Soccer Federation.
She has represented the United States on the under-17, under-20, and under-23 national teams.
It took nearly two years for her to fully recover from a strained ACL and torn patellar tendon suffered in May 2016 during her rookie season with the Boston Breakers.
She admits to being an overthinker, saying it’s hard not to analyze every single detail when trying to improve.
She’s always willing to help others, whether by sharing time, offering support, or giving back to the community. She participates in various charities and community projects.
She donated 92 soccer balls to girls in India, ensuring each participant in a youth camp had a ball to use at home and in practice.
She's married to Travis Smith. He's a teacher and a coach.
Her favorite professional sports team is the Miami Heat.
She has two dogs although one of them was originally her husband's.
