She learned much of her early football in boys' teams because there were not enough competitive girls' options available to her.

Perth Glory was the club she grew up supporting, and signing her first professional contract there fulfilled a dream she had held for years.

Long before playing for Perth Glory, Johnston and childhood friend Georgia Cassidy were ball girls for the club.

Johnston and Cassidy started out as fierce rivals, often competing for the same position and the same opportunities in Western Australian football. Their rivalry eventually became a close friendship, although one former coach avoided putting them on the same training team because they would have too much fun together. Even fitness tests became a competition between the pair, with Johnston joking that her main target was simply to beat Cassidy.
