Euro day one. Which players to watch today?

Iman Beney

Today, 2 July, marks the start of Euro 2017, with Finland facing Iceland and Switzerland taking on Norway in the opening matches. Which players should you keep an eye on?

Island - Sveindís Jane Jónsdóttir

The 24-year-old player has just transferred from Wolfsburg to Angel City. She attracted attention during the last Champions League season, when she came on as a substitute in the second half and scored four goals against AS Roma.

Finland - Eva Nyström

The Finnish centre back enjoyed success with Swedish club Hammarby, with whom she celebrated the Swedish league title and cup. Her tackles were also noticed in England, when she transferred to London club West Ham during the winter transfer window. The 25-year-old player is a key member of the Finnish defence.

Norway - Elisabeth Terland

With 10 goals and 5 assists, the Norwegian striker became the third-best scorer in the English league. The Manchester United striker says that Erling Haaland is her great inspiration in football. At club level, she shows that she is just as effective a scorer as he is. Now she will certainly want to prove it in the Norwegian jersey as well.

Switzerland - Iman Beney

At eighteen, she is one of the youngest players in Euro and also Manchester City's newest signing. Young Iman Beney has football in her blood – her father, aunt and brother are all footballers. At such a young age, she has already proven to be a great asset to Young Boys, scoring fourteen goals in 40 matches, which is very impressive for such a young player.

Today, 2 July, marks the start of the European Women's Football Championship. The championship will kick off with Group A, featuring Iceland, Finland, Norway and host Switzerland. At 18:00 Central European time, Iceland will face Finland. The official opening of Euro 2025 will take place at 21:00, when the Swiss  team will take on Norway.

Meet Norway's Frida Maanum. What's her story?

Frida Maanum

Norway will kick off Euro with a match against Switzerland. Frida Maanum will also be playing for Norway. She is the top scorer in the qualifiers and the reigning European champion with Arsenal. What is her story?

  • Frida grew up in Baerum, a suburb west of Oslo known for its stability and middle-class life—an ideal environment that supported her football journey.
  • Her older sister Hanna, also a talented player, spent most of her career at Stabaek and always spoke highly of Frida’s potential. Hanna’s career was unfortunately cut short by injury. She later studied psychology.
  • Though she stayed only about eight months in Stabaek  before transferring to Linköping, Frida left a lasting impression thanks to her talent and character.
