At just 17, Mercedes Diz has already made her senior international debut, helped Argentina qualify for the World Cup and become a local celebrity in her hometown. Her rise has been so remarkable that a restaurant has even named a burger after her.

Argentina have a new generation of young footballers hoping to take the national team to the next level. Among them is Mercedes Diz, a 17-year-old River Plate talent who has already made her mark on the international stage.

From playing in her hometown to scoring for Argentina's senior national team, Diz has enjoyed a remarkable rise. And her achievements have not gone unnoticed, particularly in Navarro, where she has become something of a local celebrity.

From the streets of Navarro to River Plate

Mercedes Diz grew up in Navarro, a town in Buenos Aires Province, where she began playing football on dirt pitches before joining a girls' team called Las Piquis.

Football runs in the family. Her father, Facundo Diz, enjoyed a 22-year professional career, making more than 500 appearances for clubs including Colorado Rapids in MLS and Argentina's Club Atlético All Boys.

The family also have close ties with Diego Barrado, a former River Plate player who became one of Mercedes' biggest inspirations. From an early age, Diz was playing alongside girls older than herself. At just ten, she attended a trial at River Plate, although getting the opportunity was not entirely straightforward.

The trial was originally intended for boys only, but Barrado intervened to ensure she could participate. And Mercedes made the most of her chance.

She impressed the scouts with her performances, particularly a stunning goal directly from a free kick. It was enough to earn her a place on the shortlist for River Plate's youth teams.

For a girl who had grown up supporting the club, it was the beginning of something special.

Three national teams in one year

Diz made her senior debut for River Plate in August 2025, aged just 16. She soon followed it up with her first goal in Argentina's top flight. Her progress at international level has been equally impressive.

In 2026, Diz represented Argentina at U17, U20 and senior level, an extraordinary achievement for a player still in her teens. Her biggest moment came in June, when she made her senior international debut against Peru in the Nations League.

And she could hardly have asked for a better start. Diz scored the equaliser in a 1:1 draw, helping Argentina mathematically secure qualification for the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil.

She also found herself sharing a dressing room with Aldana Cometti, one of the players she had admired growing up.

A hometown hero with her own burger

Diz's rise has made her a source of pride in Navarro, where one local restaurant decided to celebrate her achievements in a rather unusual way. They named a burger after her.

The special edition, called the Meme Diz, was created as a tribute to the young footballer and her achievements with Argentina. The restaurant promoted it as a burger with character, power and a goalscoring instinct, drawing comparisons with the player herself.

And the ingredients certainly lived up to the description. Featuring beef patties, smoked pancetta, mayonnaise and crispy onions, the burger was described by Diz herself as 'powerful' when she saw what went into it.

It was originally intended to be available for a limited time, but proved so popular that the restaurant decided to keep it on the menu indefinitely.

For a teenager who was playing football on the dirt pitches of Navarro not so long ago, having a burger named after her is another reminder of just how far she has come.
