The United States U20 women’s football team, coming from a historically strong nation, suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Italy last week. For 22 minutes of the game, however, the Americans were up 1:0 thanks to a goal from 18-year-old forward Micayla Johnson. What is there to know about Johnson?

She’s been playing professionally since she was 17

Micayla Johnson signed her first professional contract just six days after her 17th birthday when the Chicago Stars of the NWSL signed her to a three-year deal. She made her professional debut in the club’s first match of the 2025 NWSL season.

Johnson went on to score a goal in her first professional season despite only logging 166 minutes across 15 games. She made sure her shot was difficult to save as she helped her team equalize against the Utah Royals in a rough season where her team only won three games.

This season, Johnson is making herself a bigger part of the team. She has earned herself two starts already and although she doesn’t have a goal yet, her 13 shots have added up to 0.95 expected goals, suggesting a real one is coming soon.

She’s always been one of the country’s top prospects

One year before she went pro, Johnson trained with Racing Louisville FC of the NWSL during their pre-season at only 16 years of age, an experience that not many teenagers get to have. A few months later, she verbally committed to play for Florida State University, one of the top college soccer programs in the US that has won three of the past six national titles. She was consistently winning tournaments and titles with her youth clubs, often winning golden boot awards in the process.

Johnson didn’t become a teenage professional football player by accident. She has consistently been recognized as one of the top young players in the US.

This isn’t her first international experience

Micayla Johnson got her first international experience in 2023 when she got called up to the US U-15 side. A year later, she played a crucial role in the 2024 U-17 World Cup as she played in all six games of the US’ third place finish, its best result in the tournament since 2008. Because of her exceptionally young age, this wasn’t her only opportunity to compete in the tournament.

In 2025, she scored four goals and notched two assists in the CONCACAF qualifiers for the U17 World Cup before scoring two goals in the four games that the US played in the actual tournament. In the round of 16, she scored the equalizing goal for her country before her side was eventually knocked out in the ensuing penalty shootout.

Micayla Johnson is a talented teenager with plenty of international tournament experience who will surely be instrumental in her country’s 2026 U-20 World Cup campaign.
