Iran began their Asian Cup campaign with a 0:3 defeat to favourites South Korea. Yet it was not the result that drew the most attention. Instead, much of the focus centred on the atmosphere surrounding the match and the circumstances under which the players took to the pitch.

The match came amid escalating military conflict involving Iran, including recent U.S. and Israeli strikes, creating a somber atmosphere for the team far from home. Head coach Marziyeh Jafari and captain Zahra Ghanbari opted not to comment on the war or the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, choosing instead to focus publicly on football and the tournament.

As the anthem played, the players did not sing and subtly uncovered part of their hair, a symbolic gesture that many viewed as a quiet protest against the country’s authorities. A small group of Iranian supporters attended the match, waving national flags including the pre-Islamic revolution flag, showing visible support in a challenging context.
