The first legs of the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-finals kick off on Tuesday, March 24, with a heavyweight clash between two sides who have lifted the trophy multiple times — OL Lyonnes and Wolfsburg. The teams already met in the group stage, where the French side came out on top with a 3–1 win. However, according to Wolfsburg defender Janou Levels, who recently spoke to Queenballers on the UEFA press conference, the German runners-up are in strong form and determined to prove it — and to get their revenge.
You previously gained experience in the Women's Champions League while playing for PSV in the Dutch Eredivisie. How does that compare to your current experience with Wolfsburg? You’ve experienced the competition both as an underdog and now as one of the title contenders — what’s the difference?
I think it’s difficult to compare. With PSV, it was my very first experience and, as you said, we were definitely the underdogs, so I had to focus a lot on defending. Now, playing for Wolfsburg is different — as you mentioned, we have a lot of quality, we’re a very strong team and a good club. It’s up to us to show what we can do, and, as I said earlier, to be confident on the ball. So overall, I’d say it’s a different approach to the game.
You previously med OL Lyonnes in the league stage. What did you take away from that match, and how will you use it going into the upcoming two-legged playoff tie?
Well, I think we can be more confident going into tomorrow. We can be much more aggressive, and of course we all know OL Lyonnes is a team with a lot of quality. But as I said before, we’re also a really strong side, and we’re in good form right now. We should take that momentum into the game tomorrow and give it everything.
