Esra Luna Neter is a Dutch footballer who plays as a defender. She has represented the Netherlands at youth level.
She first wanted to play because she kept going with her brother and father to football matches. She started out at Roda ’23 when she was four.
She has studied Commercial Economics at the Johan Cruyff Academy, with a focus on sports marketing.
Her nickname “Essi Messi” started when a parent at one of her youth clubs began calling her that. The name stayed with her when she started her YouTube channel where she did challenges with footballers and celebrities.
Lionel Messi is her biggest football inspiration because of the way he plays and because she sees him as both gifted and humble. As a younger player, she also said meeting Messi was one of her biggest dreams.
Football runs through her family. She said her father still plays, her mother also played football, and her brother still plays for fun, while her family are regularly at the sideline supporting her.
