Heather Hinz is an American professional soccer player who plays as a goalkeeper for the Houston Dash of the National Women's Soccer League.
She has three older sisters.
She originally played as a striker before becoming a goalkeeper after an injury to her team's keeper.
She first played in goal during an Olympic Development Program game in London.
Her older sister Megan played professionally in Sweden and the NWSL before becoming a college coach.
She was named SEC Goalkeeper of the Year in 2023 and earned first-team All-SEC honors.
During the summer before her junior year, she interned at a goalkeeper institute, spending 16 hours a day training herself and coaching others.
She used to stress over awards and stats to get noticed for the NWSL draft but later focused on simply keeping the ball out of the net.
Even after playing her best games, she rewatched them to study every touch and find ways to improve.
She compares her mindset to an Etch A Sketch—wanting to shake off mistakes and move forward, but still remembering most of the goals she has conceded.
She earned a Bachelor's degree in Sports and Entertainment Management from the University of South Carolina.
She started playing soccer at age four and initially resisted being a goalkeeper, wanting to be "the next Messi."
By eighth grade, she fully committed to goalkeeping and believes she wouldn’t still be playing soccer today if she hadn’t made the switch.
