As history has shown time and again, sport and politics are difficult to separate. At major events such as the Olympics or the World Cup, that reality becomes even more evident. The ongoing AFC Women’s Asian Cup — where Iran’s national team is competing — is no exception.

Iran’s participation in the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup has unfolded under intense political scrutiny, with protests against the Islamic Republic taking place outside the Matildas’ group-stage match against Iran.

Members of Australia’s Iranian diaspora gathered near the stadium waving the pre-1979 “Lion and Sun” flag and chanting anti-government slogans, using the tournament as a platform to highlight the political situation and women’s rights in Iran. Protesters said their demonstrations were directed at the Iranian government rather than the players themselves.

Iran entered the match after a 3:0 opening defeat to South Korea, while host nation Australia looked to strengthen its position in Group A.

The Iranian squad has drawn global attention during the tournament, including when players stood silently during their national anthem before their match with South Korea while their head coach had wide smile over her face — a gesture widely interpreted as a subtle act of protest amid ongoing unrest in the country. On the press conference afterwards they wanted to discuss football only, not the political situation in country.

Australia players acknowledged the difficult circumstances facing their opponents, noting the pressure Iranian athletes face while competing internationally.
