Aissata Traoré is a Malian professional footballer who plays as a forward for French club FC Fleury 91 in France’s top-flight Première Ligue, on loan from NWSL expansion club Boston Legacy FC, and represents the Mali women’s national team.
She grew up as a street football kid in Bamako.
After signing for Guingamp, she struggled with the climate and suffered a malaria crisis just days after joining and wanted to go back home before deciding to fight for her place.
She has a whole list of players she admires—Andrés Iniesta, Didier Drogba and Edinson Cavani among them—but says her true idol has always been Lionel Messi.
She was part of the Mali squad that reached the semi-finals and finished fourth at the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations in Ghana, a historic run for the women’s national team.
