Elvira Johanna Herzog is a Swiss footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Frauen-Bundesliga club RB Leipzig and the Switzerland national team.
She began playing football at age 9 with boys in FC Unterstrass, and by 11 had joined the youth ranks of FC Zürich, one of Switzerland’s top women’s clubs.
Before choosing football, Elvira tried out dancing, handball, floorball, and swimming.
She starts her day with an ice bath, followed by personal training before the team practice even begins at 10 a.m.
She enjoys graphic design and creates T-shirts, including some for the Women’s EURO hosted in Switzerland.
She shares her life in Leipzig with her girlfriend, Marleen Schimmer, who also plays for RB Leipzig.
Dream post-career trip – She hopes to take a round-the-world journey after retiring from football.
She prefers salty snacks over sweet but insists the SWISS chocolate bar is non-negotiable.
She always brings a compact roll-up pillow that smells like home; she says it helps her sleep anywhere and calls it a “goalkeeper insider tip.”
First time in goal at age 11 – Elvira didn’t end up in goal by accident; she volunteered because she thought she could do better than the current keeper.
