Sandra Starke is a Namibian-born German footballer who plays as a forward for Frauen-Bundesliga club RB Leipzig and the Germany national team.
She was born in Windhoek, Namibia to a Namibian-born German father and a Dutch mother.
She moved to Germany at age 12.
She trained at the prestigious sports boarding school of 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam — one of Germany's top talent academies.
She is the sister of Namibian international Manfred Starke.
Before becoming a football pro, Sandra represented Namibia in fistball at the U18 World Championships in 2009.
She debuted for Germany in October 2019 and scored on her very first senior cap against Greece.
She lives and plays professionally with Type 1 diabetes, which she publicly revealed on World Diabetes Day 2020, becoming an advocate and role model.
She uses a sensor on her arm to measure her blood sugar via smartphone and injects insulin using a pen – she deliberately chose not to use an insulin pump.
