Lilian Isabella Yohannes is an American footballer who plays as a central midfielder. She represents the United States at senior international level.
Football was a family language in the Yohannes home: her father built a small pitch with two goals in the basement, where Lily and her dad played two-v-two against her older brothers.
Her football study habits are serious: she watches Neymar’s actions and Frenkie de Jong’s anticipation because she wants to learn those details herself.
Her maternal grandfather, Bekuretsion Gebrehiwot, was part of the family’s football legacy and famously scored from the halfway line against Ivory Coast at the 1968 Africa Cup of Nations.
Her breakout season in the Eredivisie came with a special Cruyff touch: she was named Johan Cruyff Talent of the Year for 2023–24, received the award from Frank Rijkaard, and had a Cruyff Court named after her.
Her international future came with a big personal choice: after interest from both the United States and the Netherlands, Yohannes committed to the U.S., calling it her homeland, birthplace, and home to her extended family.
It took less than one season to cement her name in OL Lyonnes’ best starting XI. Lily Yohannes is on her way to start a UEFA Women’s Champions League final at 18-years-old. The American-born and Amsterdam-bred attacking midfielder was one of Jonatan Giraldez’s first signings with the eight-time UWCL champions. She scored on her debut for the club and was awarded player of the match, she wasted no time making her stamp with the French champions.
