Captain Asllani on WSL start: Top four would be good season

Kosovare Asllani, captain of the Swedish national team and London City Lionesses, spoke about her club's ambitions for the upcoming WSL season. Although they are newcomers to the competition, LCL certainly do not plan to stay at the bottom of the table. This is also evident from the big-name signings the club made over the summer.

  • LCL are the only fully independent club in Women’s Super League history—not affiliated with a men’s team or external organisation. The club’s ambitions accelerated after being acquired by U.S. businesswoman Michele Kang in December 2023, driving significant investment in infrastructure and squad strengthening. The club signed 15 new players including Nikita Parris, Danielle van de Donk or Alanna Kennedy.
  • Swedish international Kosovare Asllani, 36, joined in summer 2024 from AC Milan. With 200+ Sweden caps and a 2016 WSL title at Manchester City, she captained Sweden at Euro 2025, scoring against England. She leads the team into their first WSL season.
  • Asllani aims for a top-four finish, rejecting a mid-table mindset, despite acknowledging the challenge of breaking into the established WSL top tier dominated by Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, and Manchester City.
  • London City Lionesses aim to avoid the fate of Bristol City (relegated 2024) and Crystal Palace (relegated 2025), positioning themselves as a well-funded, ambitious newcomer.
