For much of the game, it looked as though Czechia would open their World Cup qualifying campaign with a victory, having led for the majority of the contest. But Wales refused to relent, and in the closing minutes Elise Hughes struck to make it 2:2.

World Cup qualifying also got underway for Wales and Czechia, who meet in Group B1. Wales entered the contest as slight favourites, with many of their players competing in England and, unlike Czechia, boasting recent tournament experience after making their European Championship debut in the summer of 2025. Czechia, by contrast, are still seeking their first appearance at a major international tournament.

However, the hosts held the advantage of familiar surroundings. The match was played in Uherské Hradiště, home to both the women’s and men’s teams of 1. FC Slovácko — a stadium the Czech players know well. Most of the are playing, or used to play, in Czech league, so the play there quite often.

Czechia made the brighter start and were rewarded in the 16th minute, when Eva Bartoňová opened the scoring. The Sparta Prague captain — who has led her club to a Champions League semi-final — once again demonstrated her leadership on the big stage.

Wales responded before the break, however. Hannah Cain found the equaliser in the 30th minute, ensuring the sides went into half-time level.

First senior goal for Žufånkovå

Czechia regained the lead shortly after the restart, as Jana Žufánková fired the hosts back in front. The Slavia Prague midfielder began her career in Uherské Hradiště with Slovácko, making the moment on familiar ground all the more fitting. For Žufánková, it was her first senior goal in Czech jersey.

For a long spell, it seemed the home side were on course for a statement win and three valuable points — but celebration would have been premature.

Elise Hughes’ stoppage-time equaliser ensured the points were shared, denying Czechia what had seemed a hard-earned victory. With Albania leading the group following their win over Montenegro, the battle in Group B1 is already finely poised.
