The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that the women's soccer tournament at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will expand from 12 to 16 teams. With this change, female athletes are expected to comprise 50.7% of participants at the LA28 Games, making it the first Olympics where women are in the majority. The United States, as the host nation, will automatically qualify for the tournament. The IOC will determine the allocation of the additional spots among the six continental federations.
