The NWSL will expand with another team. It will be Atlanta

The NWSL is set to expand yet again with a 17th team being awarded to Atlanta. Backed by the ownership group of Atlanta United FC and the Atlanta Falcons, the deal reportedly involves a $165 million expansion fee — a new league record. 

• The new franchise is backed by Arthur Blank’s AMB Sports & Entertainment group, which also owns the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and MLS’s Atlanta United FC.
• The team is expected to begin play in 2028, and will be based at Mercedes‑Benz Stadium in Atlanta, continuing the city’s growing profile in professional soccer.
• Reports indicate a record-setting expansion fee of US $165 million paid for the franchise rights, underscoring the league’s rapid growth and valuation.
