Mariel is originally from Iguala de la Independencia, in the state of Guerrero, Mexico.
She cited her brother as a primary influence in her early interest in football, often playing with him in the streets of Iguala before joining organized teams.
Román is a "canterana" (homegrown player) for Toluca, having joined the club's youth academy before making her professional debut at age 15 in 2018.
