We all know it’s part of the game. Football never stands still — players come and go, squads evolve, and change is inevitable. But that doesn’t make it any easier. Every fan has that one player — the one who feels woven into the identity of the club, the one you can’t quite imagine in another shirt. You convince yourself they’ll be there forever. And then one day, they’re not.
You tell yourself it makes sense. Transfers are part of football, part of growth. Maybe it’s the right move, maybe they’ll thrive somewhere new. But even so, it still leaves a gap — and you still miss them.
So which departures have hurt fans the most?
Let’s start with the most recent case — one that came completely out of the blue. Unlike some of the other departures we’ll touch on later, this was one the Blues simply couldn’t have prepared for.
There has been speculation that more club legends, including Sam Kerr and captain Millie Bright, could leave Chelsea at the end of the season. But Guro Reiten’s move to NJ/NY Gotham came as a total shock, with no prior rumours or warning in the media.
Ok, let’s start again, because I can’t stop crying.’ With those words, Guro Reiten opened her farewell video — and fans immediately knew what was coming.
It came just shortly after she reached the milestone of 200 appearances in blue. After six and a half years, the Norway international is leaving the club that helped turn her into a star, set to test herself in the NWSL.
Chelsea fans experienced a similar heartbreak back in 2023, when long-time captain Magdalena Eriksson left the club. There is some comfort, however, in seeing the Swedish defender thrive in her new chapter at Bayern Munich. With the German giants, she has already secured a domestic double and continues to compete in the Champions League.
Another departure that hit fans hard came at Mexico’s Club América. For young left-back Nicki Hernández, Las Águilas were her first professional club — the place where she developed into one of Mexico’s top players and earned her spot in the national team. The popular defender quickly won over the fans, and across three seasons and 133 appearances, she played a key role in helping the club secure the Clausura 2023 title.
This team has allowed me to meet some of the most incredible people — my best friends — and my soulmate. This will always be my home. I love you all so much. Siempre Águilas.’ Hernández said as she said goodbye to the club that shaped her into a professional footballer.
She has now moved on to test herself in the NWSL, joining expansion side Boston Legacy.
First Jordan Nobbs. Then Vivianne Miedema. And in the summer of 2025, the Swiss princess Lia Wälti. Arsenal fans have had their hearts broken three seasons in a row, saying goodbye to players who gave so much to the club — players many expected to wear the red and white for the rest of their careers. But in none of those cases did that fairytale ending come true.
Rumours of Wälti leaving after seven seasons — with a move to Juventus in Serie A — began to surface towards the end of the summer transfer window. Even so, many Gooners refused to believe they would ever see her in another shirt.
The Switzerland captain had become one of the central figures of the team, with Leah Williamson famously describing her as the ‘mum of the club’. So when Arsenal finally confirmed her departure, there were tears all around — including from Wälti herself and her teammates.
There is, at least, some comfort for fans in the way it ended. Wälti’s final game came in a Champions League final, with the Swiss midfielder leaving London as a European champion. She was also given a fitting farewell in front of a packed Emirates Stadium.
Even after her move to Italy, Wälti made it clear where her heart still lies, saying Arsenal will always be her home — and that she will always bleed Arsenal.
To keep our selection varied, we also turn to the Czech top flight, the Fortuna Liga. There’s many of American players in Czech teams, but no one have captured the hearts of fans quite like Lauren Chang.
Sparta Prague supporters adored her — both on and off the pitch. She became a hero shortly after arriving in 2022, scoring the only goal in the spring derby to seal victory over fierce rivals Slavia. Fans and teammates alike appreciated her efforts to learn Czech and embrace the local sense of humour — something she managed with ease.
In her final season, her minutes on the pitch became more limited, as she focused on preparing for her Oxford entrance exams. She passed — but it meant saying goodbye to Sparta. In her final match, she wore the captain’s armband and received a standing ovation from the fans.
Yet the connection never faded. Chang never forgot Sparta — and Sparta never forgot her. While she didn’t win the title with the club, this season they are within touching distance of it and are also pushing for a place in the Europa Cup final. And from England, Lauren returned to Prague to support them once more.
