Lia Joëlle Wälti is a Swiss professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Juventus and the Switzerland national team. She previously played seven years for Arsenal.

Her nickname is Wally. She got this one when she came into Arsenal because her name is pronounced in the same way as Leah (Williamson).

She started an Instagram account called @lias_switzerland to showcase Switzerland to people before the UEFA Women's Euro 2025.

Her best friend is her Arsenal teammate Leah Williamson. They moved together, when Williamson tore her ACL and Wälti took care of her.

She is studying at the Swiss university FFHS (Fernfachhochschule Schweiz).

She is the captain of the Swiss national team.

Her favourite sport outside football is ice hockey.

Together with her sister, they wrote a book for childred called Lia's football journey.

She was intruduced into football by her dad who was the manager of local girl's club.

She made her Arsenal debut in August 2018 against Juventus. Seven years later, she transferred to Juventus from Arsenal.

The last few days have been marked by speculation that 32-year-old Swiss player Lia Wälti would leave Arsenal of her own accord after seven seasons. Today, Walti herself confirmed this move when she said goodbye to the club with which she won the Champions League in May in a farewell video.

The Euro, which begins on 2 July, is being held in Switzerland. The tournament will kick off with a match between the Swiss national team and Norway. The Swiss team is led by captain Lia Wälti. What is her story?

  • Lia Wälti became the first girl to train with BSC Young Boys’ U16 boys’ team in 2009. Her ability to read the game, close spaces, and win possession led coaches to accelerate her development.
  • After four years at Young Boys, Wälti moved to Turbine Potsdam (2013–2018) and then signed for Arsenal in 2018, winning the WSL (2019), two League Cups, and the UEFA Women’s Champions League (2025).
