U20 WWC Stars: Aïcha Cámara, the young Barça talent mentored by Mapi León

Aïcha Cámara has never been one to seek the spotlight. She is shy and “a woman of few words”, as those at Barcelona describe her. But the moment she steps onto the pitch, the perception changes.

The young Barça academy product established herself in the first-team squad last season and went on to win every possible title in her first year at the highest level. She is now representing Spain at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup alongside a generation of young players who could shape the future of Spanish football for years to come.

Camara was one of La Masia’s standout talents last season alongside Clara Serrajordi. Both youngsters were promoted to the first-team squad as Barcelona dealt with a series of injuries.

The step up also gave the Spanish defender of Guinean descent the opportunity to share a dressing room with one of her biggest role models: Mapi León. And it was Mapi who helped Camara settle into life with the senior team.

“She’s a role model, one of the best centre-backs in the world. She’s always willing to help me,” Camara told Barcelona’s official media during her first few days with the first team.

Learning from two of the world’s best

Mapi is not the only centre-back Camara has looked up to during her development. Another of her biggest inspirations is OL Lyonnes legend Wendie Renard.

As fate would have it, Camara would eventually find herself on the same pitch as both of them on one of the biggest stages in club football. She shared Barcelona’s defensive line with Mapi in the Champions League final in Oslo, while on the opposite side stood Renard.

Barcelona went on to win the final 4:0, allowing Camara to lift the Champions League trophy in her first season as part of the senior squad.

From Can Puiggener to La Masia

To understand Camara’s humble and reserved personality, it is worth going back to where her story began. She grew up in Can Puiggener, one of the most economically disadvantaged neighbourhoods in Sabadell. Camara has Guinean roots, while her mother is from Senegal.

Her mother has been one of the most important figures in her life and is also an influential figure within the local community. She leads the Association of African Women in Catalonia and works to improve conditions in the neighbourhood where the family lives.

It was through youth football in Sabadell that Camara first began to make her mark on the pitch. Her physical qualities and maturity quickly attracted the attention of Barcelona’s scouts, and she joined La Masia at just 11 years old.

From there, her rise through the club’s academy was rapid. By the age of 15, she was already playing for Barça’s reserve side.

Then, on February 7, 2025, came another milestone: Camara made her first-team debut in the Copa Catalunya semi-final against Lleida.

Winning everything at just 19

Despite being only 19, Camara already has a remarkable collection of silverware. During the 2025/26 season, she won Liga F, the Women’s Champions League, the Spanish Super Cup and the Copa de la Reina with Barcelona.

She can also count two Primera Federación titles, the second tier of Spanish women’s football, and two UEFA Women’s Under-19 European Championships among her honours.

Yet despite her rapid rise and everything she has already achieved, Camara still lives with her family in the same neighbourhood where her journey began.

From playing youth football in Sabadell to learning alongside Mapi León and facing one of her idols, Wendie Renard, on the biggest stage in European club football, Camara’s career has developed remarkably quickly. She may still be a woman of few words, but at Barcelona, she is increasingly letting her football do the talking.
