He led Hammarby to a league title and secured them a spot in the Champions League. Now, the former Norway national team coach Martin Sjögren has a new role—starting in January, he will take over as head coach of the Chicago Stars in the NWSL.
- Martin Sjögren has been appointed the new head coach of Chicago Stars FC, officially set to begin in January 2026 at the start of the next NWSL season.
- Sjögren, formerly head coach of Norway’s women’s national team (2016–2022), led the squad to the quarter-finals of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup but resigned following disappointing performances at Euro 2016 and Euro 2022.
- He is currently managing Hammarby in Sweden’s Damallsvenskan, and will join the Stars after Hammarby’s season concludes in November. This marks Sjögren’s first coaching role in the United States.
- Chicago Stars have had a turbulent 2025 season, going through three head coaches, with only one win from 15 matches (record: 1-9-5). The team stands just two points above the last-place Utah Royals, struggling near the bottom of the NWSL table.
