What is happening with Barcelona?

It’s one of the most successful clubs in women’s football—ten-time Liga F champions, eleven-time domestic cup winners, and three-time Champions League victors. Yet the Catalan club is facing problems. During the transfer window, they brought in only one new signing - Laia Aleixandri, while many players left. At present, they have just 17 players in their squad.

  • Barcelona Women reportedly need approximately €1 million to balance their financial accounts, prompting a strategy focused on reducing wages and selling players this summer.
  • Despite several departures already completed, El Periódico reports these measures remain "not enough to correct the deficit," and more players may need to leave.
  • Departed players include: Ingrid Engen (left after contract expiration, joined Lyon), Ellie Roebuck (mutual contract termination, now at Aston Villa) Fridolina Rolfö (contract terminated, still not known where is she going, rumors about Malmö FF were denied), Bruna Vilamala (transferred to Club América), Martina Fernández (moved to Everton).

More players to leave

  • Reserve talents Judit Pujols, Ona Baradad, Meritxell Muñoz, and Onyeka Gamero also departed.
  • Concern is mounting as departures outnumber signings, with the youth academy also being weakened due to talent moving to leagues offering better resources and opportunities.
  • Key players facing contract expiry in 2026—such as Cata Coll, Ona Batlle, Claudia Pina, Salma Paralluelo, Alexia Putellas, Caroline Graham Hansen, and Mapi León—are at risk of leaving, increasing urgency around renewals or potential sales.
  • The club has requested a revision of LaLiga's Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, asking that the women’s and youth teams’ budgets be separated from the men's side—an attempt to give more flexibility to the women’s team.
