Wu was born in Jiangyin, Jiangsu province, and her name is often rendered as Wu Chengshu in Chinese naming convention.
She made history in 2022 by becoming the first Chinese international player to sign for the Australian club Canberra United.
She earned the nickname "Xixi" from her teammates during her time playing in Australia.
While living in Canberra, Wu revealed that learning how to cook for herself was one of her biggest daily challenges since she seldom cooked while living in China.
She scored a crucial goal against Japan in the semi-finals of the 2022 AFC Women's Asian Cup to help China reach the final.
Wu suffered a facial injury in December 2022 that required surgery, briefly sidelining her during her debut season in the A-League Women.
Wu balanced her early professional career with academic studies at Beijing Sport University, a common path for elite Chinese internationals.
