Lena Ostermeier is a German footballer who plays as a defender for SGS Essen.
She joined the Essen youth academy in 2012.
She was promoted from the U-17 to the Bundesliga team at the start of 2013.
She made her Bundesliga debut at just 16 years old.
She earned a Doctorate in 2023 on “Stability of selected liquid-liquid phase separations in biomolecular systems” from TU Dortmund, Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Biology.
She worked on her doctoral research even during away-game bus rides and weekends.
She is also a volunteer firefighter and helped during a local flood.
She comes from a family with strong firefighting roots: her grandfather and father were volunteer firefighters, and she joined the youth fire brigade at just 10 years old.
She considered joining the professional fire brigade which would've ended her Bundesliga career.
Her football idol growing up was Renate Lingor, now retired female German footballer.
