Both of her parents were born in South Africa, while her maternal grandmother is from Ballymena in Northern Ireland.

Her Northern Ireland international career began almost by chance. While spending a summer holiday with her grandmother in Ballymoney, she was asked to play in a local match, where former Northern Ireland manager Alfie Wylie spotted her and later brought her into training.

She moved from England to Tennessee at around 20 to study at Cumberland University, where she spent four years and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree before becoming a professional footballer.

Holloway deliberately stepped away from Northern Ireland duty for a period to look after her mental health and concentrate on club football, returning when she felt ready to perform at her best.
