Another week is in the books. One that saw Cameroon crowned WAFCON 2026 champions, while Nigeria suffered a shock quarter-final exit and is gonna miss out on next year’s FIFA Women's World Cup 2027. Elsewhere, clubs are slowly gearing up for the start of their domestic campaigns with pre-season friendlies. It’s time for QB Weekly.
That’s right. Although Malawi enjoyed an impressive run to the final on their WAFCON debut, Cameroon proved too strong in the battle to be crowned Africa’s best. Three goals in regulation time sealed a convincing victory and the title for the Indomitable Lionesses.
The battle for bronze, meanwhile, was a much tighter affair. With the scores level, Morocco’s Nouhaila Benzina missed a penalty in the seventh minute of stoppage time, sending the match to a shootout. Algeria eventually came out on top to claim the bronze medal.
We’re staying with WAFCON for a little longer. The tournament delivered plenty of memorable storylines, but few would have expected defending champions Nigeria to bow out in the quarter-finals.
WAFCON also served as a qualifier for the 2027 Women's World Cup, with Cameroon, Malawi, Morocco and Algeria securing automatic qualification through the tournament. Nigeria, meanwhile, had been regulars on the world stage and had shown they were capable of competing with the very best. At the 2023 World Cup in Australia, they pushed England all the way before eventually going out on penalties. Not gonna happen in Brazil.
Chelsea will play all of their home games at Stamford Bridge from the upcoming season, but that is not the only change Sonia Bompastor’s side have in store. The club have announced a new partnership with Fertility Plus, becoming the first football club to enter into a partnership of its kind.
The initiative aims to raise awareness around fertility, not only among fans but also among players, giving them access to information that can help them make informed decisions about their reproductive health and future.
The transfer window may have quietened down a little this week, but this was one move that had been expected for some time. Former NWSL Rookie of the Year Jenna Nighswonger joined Arsenal from NY Gotham in the winter of 2025, but it is fair to say the move did not quite work out as hoped.
The American defender struggled for playing time with the Gunners and was subsequently sent on loan to Aston Villa in the winter of 2026. Villa opted not to make the move permanent, while it was also clear that Nighswonger was not part of Arsenal’s plans going forward.
She has therefore returned to the NWSL, joining Bay FC, where she has already made her debut.
