Cindy Caputo is a French forward for FC Fleury 91 in the French Première Ligue and a senior international for France, having come through Olympique de Marseille and AS Saint-Étienne and represented her country at every youth level.
She has said she is “very proud to be left-footed” and that, from a young age, being a lefty made her feel “special” because there were fewer left-footed players around her.
She looks up to a pair of left-footed idols: she calls Lionel Messi “the number one model” and Hatem Ben Arfa of whom she often watched compilations on YouTube.
As a little girl she says she ignored dolls and “girly things” and went straight for a ball instead, something her mum loves to remind her of.
It was her uncle who insisted she be put into football, convincing her initially reluctant mother to register her in the village club in the south of France.
She played only with boys until she was 15, admitting she didn’t want to join girls’ teams and that leaving mixed football was tough because she’d become the pampered girl in the squad.
Coming from a family of Marseille supporters, she recalls how proud they were seeing her walk into La Commanderie and wear OM’s colours.
