Eseosa Mandy Aigbogun is a Swiss-Nigerian international who plays primarily as a full-back for RC Strasbourg in France’s Division 1 Féminine and for the Switzerland women’s national team.
She holds both Swiss and Nigerian nationalities.
Her father emigrated from Nigeria to work as a pastor in Zürich, and for a long time he didn’t like the idea of his daughter playing football – but he now prays for her before every match.
Before every game she feels truly ready only after phoning home - a match-day ritual.
Growing up, she initially thought she would represent Nigeria and seriously considered playing for the Super Falcons before ultimately choosing Switzerland, a decision she links to familiarity and her life in Basel.
She described herself as very spiritually minded: she says she believes in God, the universe and energies, and often goes to her father’s Nigerian church when she’s back home in Zürich.
She initially played tennis before switching to football, inspired by her brother.
