Bruna Lourenço Urbano Costa is a Portuguese centre-back for RC Strasbourg Alsace in France’s Arkema Première Ligue and a senior international for Portugal, after earlier spells with Sporting CP and Celtic.

Did You Know?

She has said her football story began because of a late payment for swimming lessons – a missed fee pushed her towards trying football instead.

With no girls’ teams at her level in the Algarve, she played on boys’ teams at FC São Luís all the way up to age 17, thanks to a special permission from the regional association.

Bruna’s older brother also played football, and she spent weekends going with her mother to his matches – she’s said those family trips to the pitch were where she truly fell in love with the game.

She finished secondary school after moving to Sporting’s academy and later completed a university degree, even if it took “four and a half or five years”, something she now uses to show younger players that studying alongside football is possible.

As a kid she rotated through sports – first gymnastics, then swimming – and says she has “always” practised several sports.

She doesn’t have strong superstitions, but before games she always likes to put her headphones on and listen to music as a way to get focused.

Her childhood football idols were João Moutinho and Portugal playmaker Cláudia Neto.
