Manon Wahl is a French goalkeeper for RC Strasbourg Alsace in the Arkema Première Ligue and a youth international who has represented France at U16, U19 and U23 level.
She became a goalkeeper thanks to her older brother: he was an attacker and when he wanted to train as a kid he put four-year-old Manon in goal so he had someone to shoot at – and she discovered she liked it, even if she “didn’t really have a choice.”
She is a product of Strasbourg academy.
As a teenager she chose to move to Germany to challenge herself, explaining that with Racing’s youth team she was winning games by double-digit scorelines and wanted a more competitive environment.
She grew up in a family obsessed with football, with her parents, older brother, and even the family dachshund Erco all woven into her early memories of the game.
On her bedroom door as a teenager she hung a sign that read “Do not disturb, football night in progress”, and inside the room every wall was covered with football posters, scarves, clippings and a Racing shirt.
She trained and played almost exclusively with boys growing up and even joined senior men’s sessions at Seltz.
She describes Germany’s Manuel Neuer and Italy’s Gianluigi Buffon as her goalkeeping idols.
