The 2026 FIFA Men's World Cup came to a close on Sunday, allowing attention to gradually shift towards next year's FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil. For now, though, the biggest talking points in women's football lie away from the pitch. With the summer transfer window in full swing, clubs across Europe are reshaping their squads
Como 1907 is going strong
So far, clubs from the Women's Super League have dominated the headlines, but developments in Italy should not be overlooked either. Como 1907 have already attracted considerable attention in the men's game, with Cesc FĂ bregas guiding the club into European competition. The women's team, however, are building a compelling project of their own.
While Serie A Women may not be as big  as the WSL or the Frauen-Bundesliga yet, Como's recruitment suggests serious ambition. Signings such as Sofie Svava from OL Lyonnes and Riola Xhemaili from reigning Dutch champions PSV underline the club's determination to establish itself among the leading forces in Italian women's football.
More players to LCL and possible struggles
London City Lionesses continued to dominate the transfer headlines this week. The long awaited arrival of Mapi LeĂłn was finally confirmed. Like Alexia Putellas, the Spain international leaves Barcelona FemenĂ after winning every major trophy possible at club level. But while LeĂłn's move had been widely expected, it was the signing of Rosa Kafaji from Arsenal that arguably raised even more eyebrows.
Kafaji joined Arsenal from Damallsvenskan's BK Häcken ahead of the 2024/25 season as one of Europe's brightest young talents in women's football. However, a combination of injuries, limited playing time and a managerial change prevented the Sweden international from establishing herself in North London. A loan spell at Brighton followed at the start of last season, but she again struggled for making it to the starting XI.
A permanent departure from Arsenal was no surprise. Her decision to join the newly promoted Lionesses, however, has sparked plenty of debate.
The discussion is only amplified by the club's increasingly crowded squad. Michele Kang's ambitious project now reportedly includes 11 more senior players than the WSL squad regulations allow, leaving London City Lionesses with significant decisions to make before the transfer window closes. Young defender Teyah Goldie has already departed on loan, and she is unlikely to be the last player to leave temporarily, or permanently, as the club looks to balance one of the deepest squads in the league.
Beth England found her new home
When Beth England, Tottenham Hotspur's captain, tearfully announced at the end of the 2025/26 season that she would leave the club upon the expiry of her contract, it marked the end of an era for many Spurs supporters. The question of where the experienced striker would continue her career quickly became one of the summer's talking points.
Although England recently celebrated her 32nd birthday, she still has plenty to offer on the pitch. Beyond football, England has also become an important voice in raising awareness of endometriosis, using her platform to advocate for greater understanding of the condition in women's sport.
For a time, she was linked with Brighton and several clubs in WSL 2. Instead, England has opted to remain in London, signing for newly promoted Crystal Palace.

And from Europe, we head across the Atlantic, where the NWSL is in full swing while most European leagues remain in their off-season.
Gotham FC celebrated more than just a 1:0 victory over the Washington Spirit in the Queen's Classic, secured thanks to a Rose Lavelle winner. The match also marked the long-awaited return of Sam Kerr, who made her first appearance in Gotham colours.
Or perhaps more accurately, her first appearance in those colours again. Before joining Chelsea Kerr starred for the club when it was still known as Sky Blue FC. Now, the Matildas captain has come full circle. Her second debut for Gotham ended in victory, offering an encouraging first chapter in the latest stage of her career.
