Sydney Jane Collins is a professional soccer player who plays for the North Carolina Courage in the National Women's Soccer League. Born in the United States, she represents Canada at international level.
She started playing soccer at age eight with Hillsboro SC.
She was the captain of her college team at Cal Berkeley and earned multiple academic honors.
Her international career took off quickly—after just 14 minutes in her debut, she earned a surprise start in a crucial Olympic qualifying match.
She is the daughter of former NFL and CFL player Brett Collins.
She played for FC Portland Soccer Academy and the Portland Thorns Development Academy before college.
She was eligible to play for both the U.S. and Canada since her father was born in the U.S. and her mother in Canada.
She played for the U.S. U17 and U23 teams before switching to Canada.
She grew up in a sports family—her mother played beach volleyball, and her father played football.
She also competed in track and field and softball while growing up. She was a state champion in the former.
Growing up, her favorite players included Vincent Kompany, Virgil van Dijk, and Kyle Walker.
She also admired Serena Williams and Kobe Bryant and followed teams like Manchester City, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Portland Trail Blazers, and the San Francisco 49ers.
She also enjoys running, music, movies and good food.
She earned a Master’s degree in Education (Cultural Studies of Sport in Education) from UC Berkeley.
She worked as a Student-Athlete Peer Advisor, mentoring new athletes at UC Berkeley.
