In a football career, change is constant. Teams come and go. And with them, teammates. Moving to a new country only adds another layer, with a new culture, a new language, a new way of life. In moments like that, having someone familiar by your side can make all the difference.

That was exactly the case for Fridolina Rolfö and Ingrid Engen. After spending years together at Wolfsburg, they made the move to Barcelona in the same transfer window.

“Having Ingrid next to me in Barcelona meant everything. Moving to a new country and such a big club is a challenge, but when you have someone to share both the good and the bad days with, everything becomes much easier,” Rolfö said shortly after her move for club TV.

And it’s no surprise. A transfer from Germany to sunny Barcelona could easily have pushed Rolfö out of her comfort zone. She also became the first Swedish female player to wear the blaugrana shirt. Her Norwegian teammate Engen had arrived a month earlier, giving them both a sense of stability in unfamiliar surroundings.

Together since 2019

Their story began in Wolfsburg, where both joined in 2019. Rolfö arrived as the more experienced player, having already featured in the Champions League with Bayern Munich. For Engen, who is five years younger, it was her first experience outside her native Norway.

At Wolfsburg, a strong Nordic core quickly formed. Alongside Rolfö and Engen were players like goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl and Danish striker Pernille Harder - someone Rolfö had already known from her time at Linköping.

Off the pitch, friendships grew just as quickly as their on-field chemistry.
“Frido is my ‘safe place’. Football can be so fast and stressful, but she’s the person I can switch off with and just be myself,” Engen said.

Together, they celebrated success in Germany, winning the league title and two domestic cups. It was only the beginning of a partnership that would continue long after their time at Wolfsburg.

When Barcelona announced the signing of Ingrid Engen in June 2021, Rolfö didn’t have to wait long to reunite with her friend. Just a month later, the Catalan giants confirmed her arrival as well. Their paths remained intertwined and together, they experienced the most successful years of their careers.

At Barcelona, they won four league titles, five domestic trophies, and most importantly, two Champions League titles - one of them sealed by a decisive goal from Rolfö in the final.

Both are also regulars for their national teams. During international breaks, Rolfö wears Sweden’s yellow and blue, while Engen represents Norway. Despite the linguistic similarities between the two nations, their rivalry is well known but it’s one the players embrace with humour.

“We always joke about it when we meet up with the national team. Sweden vs Norway is a big thing. But the truth is, I’m her biggest fan except for those 90 minutes when we’re on opposite sides,” Engen commented with a smile.

Forever safe space

Their journeys finally diverged in the summer of 2025. Engen’s departure had been expected, as she was seeking more playing time than she was getting in Barcelona. Links to London City Lionesses emerged, but she ultimately joined French champions OL Lyonnes.

Rolfö’s exit, however, came as a surprise. After playing Euro 2025, where she made her 100th appearance for Sweden, as a free agent, she was announced as a new signing by Manchester United, experiencing English football for the first time in her career. There, she reunited with several compatriots, including Anna Sandberg and Julia Zigiotti Olme, with more Swedish players joining in January.

And yet, even as their paths took them to different corners of Europe, one thing remained unchanged.

Fridolina and Ingrid may no longer wear the same shirt, but they will always be each other’s “safe place”  a bond that began in Wolfsburg and continues far beyond it.
