Selene Itzel Valera Cortez is a Mexican footballer who plays as a defender.
She got into football at about age 10 after watching her older sister travel with the Colima state team and deciding she wanted that life too.
Football became a sister story early on: her sister played up front, Selene played in defense, and Selene loved protecting her on the pitch.
Europe has long been one of her ambitions, but she framed it as a step that should come only after first establishing herself in Mexico.
During the pandemic, she got heavily into Nerf challenge videos and said the game helped her deal with stress and boredom at home.
She started her own jewelry business called Beyoutiful JoyerĂa.
