Irene Guerrero Sanmartín is a Spanish footballer who plays as a central midfielder. She has represented Spain at senior level and was part of the squad that won the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
She grew up in Seville with two parents who both used wheelchairs and had both played wheelchair basketball, a family example that shaped how she sees sport and resilience.
She started in sevillanas classes as a child but kept sneaking away to play football instead, with her dance teacher quietly covering for her.
She was a Betis kid from the start and, she was almost always seen with a ball and a Betis shirt.
Her most meaningful role models were her parents, but she has also cited Gordillo, Joaquín and Kobe Bryant among the people who inspired her.
Irene’s first football memory is playing in the square in her neighborhood with her brother, who was also her first football role model.
Before football fully took over, she also did swimming, acrobatic gymnastics, and sevillanas as a child.
She is addicted to coffee.
