Did You Know?

Her uncle Þorsteinn Bjarnason was a footballer who represented Iceland as a goalkeeper.

In December 2019, Sveindís was loaned to Breiðablik. She helped Breiðablik finish first in the Úrvalsdeild in 2020 and was named the Player of the Year as well as winning the Golden Boot award after leading the league with 14 goals.

She is half Ghanian from her mother's side of family.

She considers her mom as her biggest inspiration.

She made her senior debut at just 14 years old with Keflavík in 2015.

She once scored a goal in youth football by throwing the ball off the goalkeeper and into the net from a long throw-in.

Her first concert was Icelandic singer Jón Jónsson, who’s also her favorite Icelandic artist.

She is a huge fan of Beyoncé and Khalid, and she almost missed seeing Khalid live due to COVID-related changes.

She had a Justin Bieber-themed bed set as a child, complete with a singing doll that played “Baby.”

Her favorite Premier League team is Arsenal, but only the men’s team.

She enjoys knitting at home as a way to relax.

She understands the Ghanaian languages Twi and Fante, thanks to her mother’s side, but doesn’t speak them.

While working in a fish factory as a teen, she was so put off that she stopped eating fish altogether.

She prefers to relax and braid her hair while listening to music before matches.

Euro day one. Which players to watch today?

Today, 2 July, marks the start of Euro 2017, with Finland facing Iceland and Switzerland taking on Norway in the opening matches. Which players should you keep an eye on?

Island - Sveindís Jane Jónsdóttir

The 24-year-old player has just transferred from Wolfsburg to Angel City. She attracted attention during the last Champions League season, when she came on as a substitute in the second half and scored four goals against AS Roma.

Finland - Eva Nyström

The Finnish centre back enjoyed success with Swedish club Hammarby, with whom she celebrated the Swedish league title and cup. Her tackles were also noticed in England, when she transferred to London club West Ham during the winter transfer window. The 25-year-old player is a key member of the Finnish defence.

Norway - Elisabeth Terland

With 10 goals and 5 assists, the Norwegian striker became the third-best scorer in the English league. The Manchester United striker says that Erling Haaland is her great inspiration in football. At club level, she shows that she is just as effective a scorer as he is. Now she will certainly want to prove it in the Norwegian jersey as well.

Switzerland - Iman Beney

At eighteen, she is one of the youngest players in Euro and also Manchester City's newest signing. Young Iman Beney has football in her blood – her father, aunt and brother are all footballers. At such a young age, she has already proven to be a great asset to Young Boys, scoring fourteen goals in 40 matches, which is very impressive for such a young player.
