Sonia Ouchene Salón is a Franco-Spanish central midfielder who plays for Montpellier HSC in France’s Arkema Première Ligue and represented France at youth international level. She has previously played for Stade de Reims, Valencia CF’s reserve team and the Tennessee Volunteers in U.S. college football.
She was born in Valencia, Spain, to a Spanish mother and French father.
She started playing football at the age of seven, before leaving home at 15 to move to Paris and join the elite INSEP academy while already playing for Reims in Division 2.
In U.S. college football, she planned to stay four years at Tennessee but returned to Europe after about five months, because she did not enjoy the very direct, physical style of play compared with the possession game she grew up in.
She likes to listen to Ed Sheeran.
Her football idols growing up were Iniesta, Isco, and Lionel Messi.
She became captain of Montpellier at just 25 after a summer marked by many senior departures.
Aitana Bonmatí is her main modern reference in women’s football.
