#16 - Defender

Samantha Ryan Hiatt is an American professional soccer player who plays as a defender for Portland Thorns FC of the National Women's Soccer League.

Did You Know?

She started her college soccer career at Boston College before transferring to Stanford University.
At Stanford, she won two NCAA national championships (2017 and 2019) and was team captain her senior year.
Internationally, she has represented the U.S. at both the U-18 and U-20 levels and captained the U-20s at the 2018 World Cup.
She is of Filipino descent.
She enjoys reading, cooking, baking, and swimming.
Her dream vacation is Greece in the summer and the Philipppines.
Both parents played soccer at Santa Clara University; her father, Eric, was part of the 1989 national championship team, and her mother, Emily, captained the team to two College Cups.
Watching her mom play made her think: “I want to do that.” She hopes to be a role model for young Filipina and Asian girls, just like her mom was for her.
One of Sam's biggest soccer inspirations growing up was Christie Rampone, whom she admired as a fellow defender on the U.S. Women’s National Team.
As a defender herself, Sam looks up to Virgil van Dijk for his impact on the game and appreciates how he has elevated the role of defenders in modern soccer.
Outside of soccer, Sam’s favorite athlete is Michelle Kwan. She grew up watching the figure skater and admired her grace, strength, and poise on the ice.
If Sam had to eat only one Filipino dish for the rest of her life, she would choose adobo with rice.
If she weren’t a professional soccer player, Sam would love to play basketball professionally. She admires WNBA players and the fast-paced, high-skill nature of the game.
Although she ultimately chose soccer, Sam played basketball in middle school and enjoyed it, along with trying sports like volleyball and swimming.
